Nuggets playoff scenarios: Who Denver could face entering final day of regular season

The Nuggets will finish off their regular-season schedule against the Los Angeles Lakers at Ball Arena at 7:30 p.m. Sunday night with their playoff opponent still up in the air.

What we do know is that the Nuggets will finish with either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, with either the Dallas Mavericks or Golden State Warriors waiting for them in the first round.

There are multiple scenarios where Denver could play either team. And none of it will be decided until the end of Sunday night’s games. Here’s how it all breaks down:

What seed could the Nuggets have?

If the Nuggets win …

Denver will clinch the No. 5 seed in the West IF the Utah Jazz also lose to the Portland Trail Blazers. If the Nuggets win and the Jazz also win, Denver will get the No. 6 seed.

If the Nuggets lose …

Denver will clinch the No. 6 seed in the West, regardless of what happens in the Utah-Portland game.

Who could the Nuggets face?

Denver will face one of two teams in the first round: Dallas or Golden State. Dallas has tiebreaker over Golden State if they finish with same record.

If Denver is the No. 5 seed …

Dallas: Two scenarios

  • Golden State wins at New Orleans on Sunday night.
  • Dallas loses vs. San Antonio on Sunday night.

Golden State: One scenario

  • Golden State loses its final game AND Dallas wins its final game.

If Denver is the No. 6 seed …

Dallas: One scenario

  • Dallas wins its final game AND Golden State loses its final game.

Golden State: Two scenarios

  • Golden State wins its final game.
  • Dallas loses its final game.
