Nuggets’ Bones Hyland selected to NBA’s Rising Stars Challenge as injury replacement

Bones Hyland isn’t getting time off during NBA All-Star Weekend.

The Nuggets’ rookie on Thursday was selected to the Rising Stars Challenge as an injury replacement for Kings guard Davion Mitchell. Hyland, 21, will be playing on Team Payton, coached by Hall of Famer Gary Payton. The event takes place 7 p.m. MST Friday and will air live on TNT.

The 6-foot-3, 173-pound guard is averaging 8.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists for the Nuggets through 46 games (including three starts). He’s shooting 34.6% from beyond the arc.

The 26th pick in the 2021 NBA draft is the 15th Nuggets player to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge. This is the second year Denver has had at least one representative. Michael Porter Jr. and Facundo Campazzo were selected last year.

This year, the NBA is introducing a new format where 28 participants — rookies, sophomores and players from the NBA G League Ignite — are split up among four teams in a three-game tournament. Other coaches include Rick Barry, Isiah Thomas and James Worthy.
